Dr.Anahvia Moody
Licensed Psychologist (PhD)
I’m Dr. Anahvia Moody, licensed psychologist. I believe in a whole-person approach to mental health, and I am committed to providing evidence-based treatments for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma related concerns. "Evidence-based" means that the treatment has undergone rigorous testing and found to be consistently effective in alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life. Many of these treatments have been around for decades and are constantly being improved upon. Any treatment is flexible and can be adapted to meet my clients' specific needs and circumstances.
In addition to anxiety disorders, I have experience treating problems such as depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, insomnia, nightmares, low self-esteem and negative self-concept, and general life stress. If your primary concern is not anxiety, OCD, or trauma-related, then another therapy practice is better suited to your needs.
A commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and values
I have worked with individuals who represent nearly every facet of the beauty that is human diversity. Cultural humility is integral to my approach to mental health treatment. You are welcome here, whether you have a diagnosable mental health concern, or if you are seeking help with processing anxiety-related issues directly related to identity and discrimination. This applies to all aspects of diversity such as race and ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual and gender diversity, citizenship status, and more. You can discuss these topics in a safe, affirming space. I practice flexibility in my approach to therapy, which helps us to integrates the cultural practices, values, and experiences most meaningful to you. Moreover, I recognize that the dynamic between us is also influenced by my own cultural norms. When needed, we will discuss how to best integrate our unique perspectives to improve the effectiveness of therapy.
My approach to therapy
My approach to treatment is rooted in evidence-based practices (EBPs). EBPs are interventions that are well-researched and known to work if both client and provider give it their best efforts. No treatment will work if the provider is too inexperienced, or if the client is not fully engaging in the process. These treatments will help you develop a more realistic, balanced way of thinking and learn to accept life’s uncertainties. Anxiety thrives on doubt and leads us to seek to control everything; as you already know from your own experiences, that is an impossible task! By learning to let go of trying to control things that we cannot, you will be set on a path toward mental stability and peace, even in the midst of uncertainties or stressors that come your way. I believe that therapy isn’t about feeling better—it’s about getting better at feeling. In other words, learning how to accept all of our emotions, even the unpleasant ones, will help reduce the intensity of our emotions and increase motivation to do the things we want and needs to do. Being afraid of our emotions, believing we can’t handle them, or trying to shut some emotions down can work in the short term. The problem is, we have to constantly put in the effort to keep unpleasant emotions at bay, which drives us further away from what really matters in our lives.
Moreover, anxiety is very good at lying—it tells us we cannot do something, or we will fail, or something bad will definitely happen. Together, we will learn how to identify the thoughts keeping you stuck in the cycle of anxiety and “reset” your life. We will keep the things that work for you and focus on getting rid of the things that don’t. To get an idea of what that may look like, visit the Specialties page.
